Why can silica sol play an adhesive role?

Hits: 892 img

Silica sol is a colloid formed by dispersing amorphous (that is, structurally variable) silica gel particles in an aqueous medium. Under suitable conditions, it can undergo gelation to form a gel. Due to the ability of colloidal particles to connect with each other under certain conditions, they form a spatial network structure. This spatial network structure has a certain strength, hence serving as an adhesive. There are two terms here: gelation and gel. These are two distinct concepts. Gelation is a verb that reflects the process of a colloid transitioning from a liquid state to a solid-liquid state. On the other hand, gel is a noun denoting the product of the gelation process.
