The compatibility of silica sol with water can be explained from the following aspects:
1. Dispersibility: Silica sol itself is a dispersion system of silica particles in water, so it has good water solubility. These particles can be evenly dispersed in water to form a stable colloidal solution.
2. Adsorption: There are a large number of hydroxyl groups (-OH) on the surface of silica sol particles, which can form hydrogen bonds with water molecules, thereby enhancing the stability of silica sol particles in water. At the same time, this adsorption also enables silica sol to adsorb some impurities and pollutants in water, which has a certain purification effect.
3. Insolubility: Although silica sol particles can be evenly dispersed in water, they do not dissolve in water. This is because there is no obvious chemical reaction between silica and water, and water molecules have no affinity for silica sol particles. Therefore, silica sol maintains a colloidal state in water, not a dissolved state.
