The difference between silica sol and water glass

Hits: 764 img

Although both sol and water glass are silicate materials, there are obvious differences in chemical composition, physical properties, and application fields. The following will analyze the differences between the two in detail.
1. Chemical composition:
Silica sol is a colloidal solution, mainly composed of hydrates of silicon dioxide (SiO2), and its molecular formula is mSiO2·nH2O. The silicon dioxide particles in silica sol are dispersed in water in the form of colloids to form a transparent or translucent liquid. Water glass is a silicate solution, mainly composed of sodium silicate (Na2SiO3) or potassium silicate (K2SiO3), in which silicate ions (SiO3²⁻) combine with water molecules to form a solution.
2. Physical properties:
Silica sol has excellent stability, and its colloidal particles are not easy to precipitate, and can maintain a stable dispersion state for a long time. Silica sol has a high viscosity and can be used as an adhesive or coating. Water glass has good water solubility, and its solution is alkaline, which can react with acid to form silicic acid precipitation. Water glass has a low viscosity and is usually used as an auxiliary agent or additive.
3. Application fields:
Due to its stable colloidal properties and high viscosity, silica sol is widely used in coatings, casting, ceramics, textiles and other fields. For example, in coatings, silica sol can improve the adhesion, wear resistance and weather resistance of coatings; in casting, silica sol can be used as a sand binder to improve the dimensional accuracy and surface quality of castings. Water glass is mainly used in the construction, textile, printing and dyeing, papermaking and other industries. In the construction industry, water glass can be used as a concrete admixture to improve the strength and durability of concrete; in textile printing and dyeing, water glass can be used as an auxiliary agent to improve the dyeing performance and feel of fabrics.
